Each year, in early June, volunteers pilots and ground crew join 2 dozen Scouts and their leaders at Belle Vue airfield near Great Torrington in north west Devon for a weekend camp at which the youngsters are coached through their various aviation-related badges, culminating in each of them acting as navigators on a cross-country flight of about 30 minutes.
The weekend has more far-reaching consequences that simply their study of meteorology, navigation and the principles of flight but is intended to inspire the Scouts to achieve goals that they would never have previously dreamt possible and provide an example to them of how to aspire to greater things in their future lives.
